Jeff Robinson Trio
The Jeff Robinson Trio started in 1995 after the debut of Jeff’s critically acclaimed play “Live Bird” about jazz icon and alto saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker. Jeff Robinson on saxophone, Blake Newman on bass and Phil Neighbors on drums.
The Jeff Robinson Trio accompany poets every Sunday at the Lizard Lounge Poetry Jam and have done so for more than 20 years. They have worked with literally thousands of poets including the Patricia Smith, Quincy Troupe, Amiri Baraka and Regie Gibson. They have recorded on Rounder Records, and Jeff has coached several of the Lizard Lounge Poetry Slam Teams to compete in the National Poetry Slam. They have re-released their critically acclaimed CD “Getting Fixed.” The concept CD is a tool to fight substance abuse.
Here are a few quotes about the band from three distinguished critics.
“Whether they’re the fierce undercurrent of a poet’s musings or simply jammin’ on their own, the Jeff Robinson Trio exhibit a power and confidence that flirts with perfection.” Award Winning Poet Patricia Smith
“The trio was a surprise hit of the last Boston Music Awards. And it’s the glue at the Lizard on Sunday, weaving sinuous riffs that meld uncannily with the rhythm of the poetry.” Steve Morse, The Boston Globe
“The Jeff Robinson Trio is one of the most innovative and revolutionary bands of today that mixes the old with a new kind of flavor.” Abiodun Oyewole, The Last Poets
